Welcome to Fuerteventura

Evocative of the stark beauty of the vast Sahara, the island of Fuerteventura mesmerizes with miles of golden sand dunes and meandering white-sand beaches that invite endless exploration and promise the ultimate escape. The second largest island of the Canary archipelago, Fuerteventura is approximately 98 kilometers long and 38 kilometers wide between its farthest points. Over 150 spectacular beaches and breathtaking views of the infinite ocean punctuate the desert-like landscape of Fuerteventura. The rich coastal areas of Fuerteventura are a mecca for watersports lovers and sun worshippers from around the globe.

The main resort areas on the island are Corralejo in the north, Caleta de Fuste on the East coast and Jandia in the south. The capital, Puerto del Rosario is not a holiday destination but does provide the chance for retail therapy especially at the new shopping centre Las Rotundas.

Corralejo

As a holiday resort, Corralejo has something for everyone. There are the numerous restaurants centered around the port area, specialising in the fresh fish which is caught that day. In the old town area there are many traditional spanish bars where you can try the tapas along with a nice cold beer. (often these small bars are very competitive on prices so get in there and practise your spanish - you may be pleasantly surprised).

The new town area of Corralejo has everything you would expect from a holiday resort. There is a tremendous amount of shops selling anything and everything, restaurants covering just about every type of cuisine, small friendly bars with local entertainment, karaoke bars for you X-Factor hopefuls, and then the Atlantic Centre where you can party the night away. Or you may simply want to stroll around the waterfront taking in the views.

For the youngsters (and young at heart) there is the Baku water park with its water slides, rock climbing wall and haunted house. There is a tenpin bowling alley, numerous arcades and a whole host of things designed to keep the kids happy. Watch for the clowns and human statues as you wander around town.

The water provides a wealth of activities such as jet-skiing, deep sea fishing trips, catamaran trips, glass bottom boat rides and snorkeling adventures. You could take a trip out to Lobos Island where the family that still live there will feed and water you after your hard day lying on the private, golden sand beach. You could even take a ferry across the water to Lanzarote - however why would you want to leave Fuerteventura, even for a day?

Tamaragua - (La Capellania)

Whilst Corralejo has everything you could possibly want for a great holiday, some times you may want to just have a couple of drinks and a bite to eat a bit closer to home. Just a short walk from the villa there are 2 bars, Shooters bar showing all the UK sports (and the soaps) where a couple of nights a week entertainment such as bingo, quizzes and karaoke takes place. Alternatively there is Abuelo Jacinto's bar which is a typical spanish cafe serving a wide selection of dishes and drinks. Also nearby is the Supermarket which stocks just about everything you could need. There is a merceria (haberdasher) who can carry out any clothing repairs or alterations (essential after a few nights in the restaurants and bars) and an internet cafe for those cheap calls home. There is a cinema on site however the films are all spanish language.

El Cotillo (the lagoons)

Just a 15 minute drive takes you to the amazing beaches and lagoons of El Cotillo. Here you can swim in the azure waters that flow into the natural lagoons. There are beaches to suit all tastes from water sports lovers through to total sun worshippers who just want to sit in their own piece of paradise. The photo gallery contains images of the beaches but no photographs can do them justice. Why do you think that this is where the locals tend to go!!!

There are also many excellent restaurants in El Cotillo so you can watch the sun go down whilst dining al fresco.

The Dunes (El Jable) Natural Park

Another gem for those water babies and sun worshippers. A short drive from Corralejo will take you to the famous sand dunes. Formed from the sands of the Sahara which blow over occasionally on a wind that the locals call a 'Calima', this stretch of beach runs for for miles through a protected area. Look out the aircraft window as you approach and you may see what lies in store

La Lajita

Here in the southern end of the island you will find the Oasis Zoo and Park. Definately worth a day out.
